The Child Development Services (CDS) is the child and adolescent mental health division of IMHANS. The CDS started functioning in the Govt. Medical college campus in the year 2007 in a temporary two room building allotted to IMHANS. Initially the CDS was an extension of the Child Guidance Clinic of the Department of Paediatrics of the Govt. Medical College and functioned as weekly outpatient clinic. Later on the services of Clinical Psychologist, Speech Therapist, Developmental therapist and Special Educator are provided with financial support from the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM).
Over the years the CDS have developed into a referral centre for children with develop-mental disabilities and psychological disorders. This is the only centre in the Govt. sector in the north Kerala to provide multidisciplinary comprehensive care to children with develop-mental disabilities and psychological disorders. Facilities for early detection and multi dis-ciplinary treatment for developmental disabilities like ADHD, autism, cerebral palsy and in-tellectual disability are provided at the CDS.
The CDS routinely conducts educational and awareness programs for parents, school teach-ers and health professionals. doctors. Postgraduate students of Pediatrics and house surgeons from Govt. Medical College, Kozhikode are regularly posted to CDS. MSc nursing students and BSc nursing students of Govt. nursing college, Kozhikode and also clinical psychology students and social work students are given placement at the CDS.
Over the last 10 years CDS has collaborated in 16 thesis works and has published 9 re-search papers in national and international journals in collaboration with the Department of Paediatrics at Govt. Medical College, Kozhikode.
The Community Developmental Disability Project (CDDP) is a community based innovative program to provide multi disciplinary care to children with developmental disabilities and psychological disorders. The program is implemented in out-reach clinics of the CDS. A mobile team comprising of clinical psychologist, speech therapist, developmental Therapist and special Educator visit the out-reach clinics on prefixed dates and provide early intervention services and remedial therapy. The out-reach clinics started functioning in Malapuram and Kozhikode districts in 2011 and Wayanad and Kasargode in 2013. The program was started with own fund from IMHANS which was later on supported by the NHM. The pro-gram in Wayand and Malapuram district were discontinued when NHM stopped funding the program in 2014. Subsequently the CDDP project in Kozhikode and Malappuram continued with support from the state initiative on disability (SID), a project of the Social Justice Dept. of Govt. of Kerala.
CDS in association with CDDP form a unique model of community based multi disciplinary care to children with developmental disabilities and emotional disorders. Children evaluated in detail at the CDS are referred to the nearest community clinic for follow up therapy with periodic monitoring and planning at the CDS. This unique model provides economic advantage to both parents and the Govt. and also facilitates support from local people’s initiatives and Self Govt. bodies (LSGs).
