The Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (IMHANS) was established as per the G.O (MS) No.299/82/HD dt.4.12.82, registered as a society under the Madras Registration Act XXI of 1860 on 8.6.83 and started functioning in the Govt. Mental Health Centre Campus, Kozhikode in the year 1984-85. The aim of developing into an institute of national importance materialized when the institute was selected by the Govt. of India to develop in-to a centre of excellence in mental health in the 11th five year plan as part of the National Mental Health Program.
IMHANS achieved a major milestone with the opening of the new multi storied building in the Kozhikode Medical College campus by Sri. Oommen Chandy, Chief Minister of Kerala on 27th February 2015. The jubilant inaugural ceremony was attended by Sri. VS Sivakumar, Honourable minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. M.K. Muneer, Honourable minister for Panchayats and Social Justice, parliament and legislative assembly members and other dignitaries.
As part of the centre of excellence scheme, M Phil program in psychiatric social work was started in the year 2014-15 affiliated to the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) with intake of 8 students. Post basic diploma in psychiatric nursing, recognized by the Indian Nursing Council was started in the year 2015-16 with intake of 10 students. M.Phil clinical psychology course is expected to commence in the next academic year.
